A Roustabout is a natural gas and oil worker who maintains all things at an oil field. Have you ever wondered how they work in oil and gas operations? Their work is physically and mentally challenging, and they are essential to the safe operation, and repair, of heavy machinery at oil and gas drilling operations. While formal qualifications are not required to work as a Roustabout, previous experience and skills in trades such as construction, engineering, welding, and shipbuilding definitely come in handy. Motivation and discipline are important personality traits since they typically begin as apprentice workers on oil rigs, and work long hours as manual laborers in difficult outdoor environments. A typical workday for a Roustabout is varied, and may primarily include a great deal of cleaning as a central duty. That includes cleaning up drill sites and rigs and spills to prevent accidents or injuries. Hauling away and disposing of debris is done with dump trucks, loaders, and forklifts, so technical staff should be experienced at operating heavy machinery. Heavy machinery is also frequently used to move materials around the sites. Roustabouts also unload deliveries of supplies, store them, and transport deliveries to work sites. If they work at offshore oil rigs, they also transport deliveries to and from ships. In addition to transport, they learn to load and offload supplies and begin the proper installation of pipes, flow lines, and engines for drills and pumps.
Daily, repair and maintain pumps and other equipment to ensure a steady flow of oil or gas, and to prevent hazards during oil extraction operations. They also conduct frequent inspections as safety measures to prevent equipment failure or fires. Other daily cleanings and organizational responsibilities include maintaining oil tools, drilling equipment, and machinery, and cleaning corrosion on tools to keep them in good working order. Roustabouts may dismantle and repair pipes, boilers, and engine parts. Other grueling tasks may involve digging ditches around wells. Staff who work on offshore rigs are also expected to perform routine cleaning and upkeep tasks on ships. Maintaining site safety is central to the role of a Roustabout. Good communication skills are essential between all of them and Roughnecks at oil and gas operations to coordinate activities and set priorities efficiently and safely. What’s a Roughneck, you ask? It’s a promotion for a Roustabout in the oil and gas industry. While their job is carried out under the supervision of lead professionals, a Roughneck does tasks involved in the drilling operation under the supervision of the Driller. Roustabouts and Roughnecks work as part of a small team at oil and gas drilling operations. Staffs who are interested in working offshore must be at least 18 years old. They are also required to complete a variety of courses which include offshore survival and emergency response training as part of a firefighting course. Working on a rig involves hard, physical labor in all types of weather for long periods of time.
